This artist left excellent paintings that will be useful to anyone trying to make models of ships from the time of George III. This period is perhaps one of my favorite periods of English shipbuilding. The perfect hull lines, rich stern carvings and figureheads, as well as elaborate allegorical images along the ship’s sides. This period would end during Horatio Nelson’s time, when utility would prevail over the beauty of the sailing ship.
Joseph Marshall depicted 11 sailing ship models showing views from the stern and bowsprit. These are:
- HMS Alert
- HMS Ambuscade
- HMS Barfleur
- HMS Enterprize
- HMS Experiment
- HMS Intrepid
- HMS Kingfisher
- HMS Portland
- HMS Royal George
- HMS Royal Oak
- HMS Sphinx
The paintings are in the British Museum, except for 2 which can be found in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
